In December 2009 Matthew Whyman (S15) was in great form at the Welsh Disability Long Course Champs. He won 4 e3vents in the 100 and 400 freestyle, 100 back and 200 IM. He also finished second in the 200 back andf 200 freestyle events. In all of his swims he obtained PBs. He also broke the British Deaf U14 Long Course records in the 200 and 400 free and the 200 back. Well done Matthew!!
March 2009 was an eventful month for Matthew Whyman and Daniel Voss who are both S15 (hearing impaired) swimmers. At the beginning of March, Matthew was competing in his first DSE Junior National event, which was held at the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield. Matthew was not only representing the club but also the region, Greater London. He came away with 6 personal bests. In one of the events he obtained a British Deaf U14 record in the 200IM. He achieved gold medals in the 200 IM and 50 Back and silver medals in the 100 back, 50, 100 and 400 free. He was top boy for the London Region, who finished in a credible 7th out of 16 Regions. As a result of Matthew’s achievements he has now been selected to take part in the London ASA Disability Talent Programme.
Both Matthew and Daniel Voss were in action at the end of March 09, where they swam at Loughborough University in the Deaf Nationals. This weekend also saw both attend 2 training sessions and a fitness assessment as well as the gala! Daniel achieved a silver medal in the 16 and over 50 breastroke, a bronze medal in the 50 free and 4th place in the men’s open 100 breastroke. Matthew achieved a silver medal in the 14/15 years 50 backstroke, bronze in the 50 free, 7th place in the men’s open 100 free and 6th place in the men’s open 100 backstroke.
Congratulations go to Daniel Voss (24) who has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Deaflympics in September 09. This event is taking place in Taipei, Taiwan. There is very little funding available for the swimmers at this event as such the swimmer has to find the funds. If you are in a position to donate any funds to Daniel then please speak with either Denise Whyman or any committee member on club nights.
In May 09, Matthew competed in his first British International Disability meet held over 3 days of competition at Ponds Forge, Sheffield which attracted disabled swimmers from all over the world. Matthew was in fine form. He competed in 5 events over the 3 days. On day one he swam in the 200 IM, 100 Back and 100 Free. He made the B final of the 100 back. He achieved three personal bests that day together with 1 silver and 1 bronze. The following day he swam in the 400 free, achieving yet another personal best and a gold medal. He again reached the B final and swam yet another personal best. On the final day of competition he swam in the 50 Free. He achieved another personal best and a further gold medal.
