New research reveals one in three children leave primary school unable to swim
17 May 2012
Learning to swim at an early age can ultimately go on to save a
child’s life and with drowning being the third most common cause of
accidental death in children, it’s concerning to learn that one in three
children are now leaving school unable to swim.
The startling new research carried out by Kellogg’s and the ASA has
revealed that around 200,000 children will leave primary school this
summer unable to swim, amounting to an astonishing 2million non-swimmers
over the next ten years.

Gator qualifies for London gala
Waltham Forest Gators swimmer Emanuel Joseph has qualified for the London Regional gala after an impressive showing at Crystal Palace.
The 11-year-old will now be taking on the 400 meter individual medley, 400M, 200M and 100M freestyle at the gala in June.
Joseph banked three London times at Crystal Palace and said: "I love swimming the 400m as I seem to get better during longer races.
"I so wanted to get a London time in the 400 individual medley because it is more difficult than any other race, as there are so many things that you can get wrong - and to get the 400 freestyle as well is fantastic."
Also in action was 12-year-old Esteban Marmolejo. He secured another national time for the 200m individual medley to go with his national time already banked for the 100m backstroke.

WELL DONE to Isabelle Andrews, BWFSC Jack Petchy Award Winner for April 2012
Isabelle Andrews, 12 years, has been nominated by BWFSC as the latest Jack Petchy award winner for her hard work and commitment to training. Isabelle has improved significantly since progressing through the development squads into the top squads seven months ago.
Isabelle said “I’m really happy to be recognised. I’ve not been in the top squads that long, so to receive the Jack Petchy award is fantastic and will make me push even harder in training. I hope the money can be spent on a team building event with the rest of the squad swimmers.”
The Jack Petchy scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables schools and organisations to celebrate the achievements of their young people.
Keep a look out for next month’s winner on the club notice board and website.
